![]() They won't get locked out quickly if they lose a few times, though, so they can keep trying - and while the learning process might feel a little slow at first, kids won't feel pressured to shell out money at that point to keep playing Dungeon Faster. ![]() Kids don't get a lot of guidance past the tutorial, so if they get stuck at some point, they may not be sure how to advance in the game. For instance, instead of just clicking on a card to find out what it can be used for, you have to go through multiple steps to get a description, which slows down the process. There are a few other less-than-ideal design elements. A different sound rings out for each item you find on the board, and while battles aren't overly detailed, monsters bleed when you strike them with a sword and occasionally groan. But the instructions are a little hazy - they don't clearly explain every element, such as what the gold teeth are used for, but kids should be able to figure out what to do as they play. The game has a fairly clever - and fun - format. Kids and the monster will take turns trying to harm each other until someone runs out of energy and loses. Kids can choose a card from their deck to make moves such as putting their opponent to sleep for three turns. Most of the strategy comes into play during the face-offs with various monsters who are preventing you from exiting. Kids' main objective in Dungeon Faster is to find a key and the exit it opens. Because their experience will literally be based on the luck of the draw, every round is truly different - which makes Card Crawl's pace feel a lot less sluggish than its name implies.Combining elements of a card game and a board game, this app can seem a little overwhelming at first but isn't hard to play. But once kids do, the game's fun factor is significantly higher. Patience can be required, particularly in the beginning when it can take a few rounds to figure out some effective strategies. Depending on where kids have dragged previous cards, they may have no other choice than to allow a monster card to attack because there are literally no other moves they can make. It isn't hard to run out of room, with shadowed-out cards you've used filling up available spaces and nowhere to put new ones, or no way to pull one out of the backpack space. The functionality can also be problematic: Kids may need to drag a card more than once to its desired location. The graphics are fairly simple: The dealer's motions are repetitive, and there are a limited number of cards, so kids probably won't see a ton of surprising new ones as they play. But it's often a better idea to store it in the backpack spot all the way to the right, where it'll be saved for later use when you need it. Dragging a potion card (which revives you when your energy is low) to either side of your avatar card will immediately put it into use. ![]() Much of kids' success will depend not only on which cards they use, but also on where they place new ones that are dealt. The game essentially involves counting, sometimes choosing the better of two not-great options, and trying to plan ahead. That can involve using a weapon card to attack a monster, pulling coins into one of the spaces beside your avatar card, or making other moves.
